Baringo County number 030 is located in the Great Rift Valley region and borders Turkana County and Samburu County to the North, Laikipia County to the East, Nakuru County to the South and Kericho County, Nandi County, Uasin Gishu County, Elgeyo Marakwet County and West Pokot County to the West. It is home to the 2nd President of Kenya H. E. Daniel Toroitich arap Moi.
According to the 2009 Kenya Population and Housing Census the population is 555,561 with a population density of 50 people per Km2 and an annual growth rate of 2.6%. Age Distribution is; 0-14 years (48.4 %), 15-64 years (48.2 %) and 65+ years (3.3 %).
Kabarnet is the administrative capital of the county.
It covers an area of 11,015Km2.
The County’s rainfall varies from 1,000 to 1,500mm in the highlands to 600mm per annum in the lowlands with temperatures ranging from a minimum of 10°C in the highlands to a maximum of 35°C in the low lying plains.

Education and Literacy:
As at 2007, the County had 587 Primary schools with an enrolment of 142,127 pupils and a teacher to pupil ratio of 1:27 and 103 Secondary schools with an enrolment of 18,959 pupils and a teacher to pupil ratio of 1:27.
Tertiary institutions in the county are 12 which include Polytechnics, Teacher Training Colleges and Commercial Colleges.
6 Commercial Banks and 2 Micro-Finance Institutions provide the people with financial services.
Baringo County has 184 health facilities with 4 District Hospitals, 1 Sub-District Hospital, 156 Dispensaries, 19 Health Centres, 2 Medical Clinics and 2 privately owned institutions. The average distance to the nearest health centre is 15km.
The most prevalent diseases in the county are malaria, pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infections (URTI), worms and diarrhoea.
The major attraction in the County is Lake Bogoria with its hot springs and geysers, Lake Baringo, the equator crossing at mogotio and Turkwel Gorge. Others are hills, escarpments, waterfalls, cliffs valleys and gorges which are a result of the steps of the rift valley as it cascades from the highlands to the low lying plains.
The region is aplenty with reserves and sanctuaries with a variety of wildlife including Elephants, Buffaloes, Crocodile, Hippos and various bird species.
The major economic activities include pastoralism, agriculture and sand harvesting. Agricultural activities include dairy farming and growing of maize, groundnuts, cotton and coffee which is practiced in the highlands. Pastoralism is practiced in the low lying plains of the County where rearing of goats, sheep, cattle and camels and bee keeping are the major livestock activities.
With the adoption of the new constitution in 2010 which ushered in the devolved system of governance, the Governor is the Executive authority in the County together with his deputy, the Senator is to represent the County at the Senate and through affirmation of women and youth rights, the Woman Representative is to represent the County’s women and youth issues at the National Assembly.

Baringo County has eleven (6) constituencies and 30 electoral wards. Tiaty has the highest number of wards with 7, followed by Eldama Ravine with 6, Baringo North and Central has 5 each, Baringo South 4 and Mogotio 3 wards.
